Music Hack Day has really grown over the last couple of years into a must attend event. When it finally arrived in New York City last week it felt like it had somehow matured to the next level. A much wider range of sponsors were there with much bigger prizes and really pitching their API's and tools to the attendees. There were also many more attendees this time, supposedly around 300 or more people were on the waiting list.

We were there to talk with people about using RjDj as a platform for creating interactive music. One of the most encouraging factors at this hack day, was the reception of projects which allowed direct manipulation of music. All three of the winning entries did this in some way.

  • First prize: Invisible Instruments combined an iPod Touch and a Wii remote to enable the playing of invisible instruments
  • Second prize: djtxt Collaborative Party Playlists via SMS
  • Third prize: Stringer a virtual string instrument.
Our demo of RjDj Moovz also created quite a bit of buzz and cheering early on at the start of the event. We are very excited to see the development of projects such as these and interested how they could be released as ways of interacting with music.

Oh that’s just fantastic, this type of event should be held in colleges also. Very nice concept.
